Keeping an Atal Tinkering Lab active all year

Updated November 2026 5 min read

About 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs have been set up under the Atal Innovation Mission over the past decade, 5,945 in government schools and 4,055 in private schools. Building the lab is the first step. This guide looks at keeping it busy.

What the reporting shows

  • The Union Cabinet approved AIM 2.0 with an outlay of about ₹2,750 crore, extending the mission to 2028.
  • In a sample of schools, 67% said they need more money to run their lab well, with extra spending going mainly to tools, space and trainers.
  • In the same sample, the share of students taking part in the lab fell from 64% to 43% between 2016-17 and 2022-23.

Ways to keep the lab busy

These are KodeBee's suggestions based on the points above.

  • Put the lab on the timetable for every class, so it does not depend on a few keen students.
  • Plan a project for each grade using the equipment you already have.
  • Train more than one teacher or mentor so the lab never depends on one person.
  • Track how many students use the lab each term and share the number with the principal.
  • Budget for consumables and small kits, not only big equipment.
  • Give projects a goal: a school showcase or a student competition.
