CBSE Composite Skill Lab: a checklist for school leaders

Updated November 2026 7 min read

CBSE introduced Composite Skill Labs through Circular Skill-75/2024 (23 August 2024) and issued detailed guidelines in Circular Skill-13/2026 (20 March 2026). This guide sets out what those documents say in plain terms, then suggests an order of work.

What CBSE requires

Schools applying for new CBSE affiliation need the lab in place. Existing affiliated schools must set one up within three years of the 2024 circular, which the later circular puts at 22 August 2027.

  • Space: one lab of at least 600 sq ft for Classes VI to XII, or two labs of at least 400 sq ft, one for Classes VI to X and one for Classes XI to XII.
  • Time: CBSE guidelines suggest planning around 110 hours of skill education a year for Classes VI to X.
  • Safety: wide exits, a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit, emergency stops, labelled storage and posted do's and don'ts. The lab is planned for 25 to 40 students.
  • Equipment: CBSE describes its tool and equipment lists as suggestive, so schools can adapt them to the skill subjects they choose.

A practical checklist

The steps below are KodeBee's suggested order of work, not a CBSE requirement.

  • Confirm with your affiliation authority exactly what applies to your school and by when.
  • Measure your room against the 600 sq ft or 2 x 400 sq ft options and note exits, power points and storage.
  • Choose the skill sectors you will teach before you choose equipment.
  • Match equipment to those sectors instead of buying the full suggested list.
  • Plan who will teach, and how they will be trained.
  • Fix a timetable that fits about 110 hours a year for Classes VI to X.
  • Phase the spending: start with a few zones and add more later.
